In a nutshell
In the past it used to be held twice a year (in April and at mid-August) but since the waning of the ancient Joust, no one took care of the tradition associated with Piazza Maggiore until July 27, 1995 when the first modern Joust of Chivalry was held.
It is a unique spectacle of costumes, banners, and sounds featuring about four hundred figures from Borghi and Sestieri, preceded by the representative group of the Joust of Chivalry. The Palio designed each year by a different artist and inspired by the history, symbols, monuments and characters of the city of Sulmona is awarded at the end of the competition in a ceremony held in the center of Piazza Maggiore.
