Palio dell'Assunta and Historical Procession of Paliano
A re-enactment to celebrate Marcantonio Colonna
Paliano celebrates the Palio dell'Assunta (Palio of the Assumption) and the Historical Pageant, which celebrates the victorious battle led by Marcantonio Colonna-the Prince of Paliano-held in Lepanto in 1571 against the Turks. The festivities begin with the Historical Pageant in period dress and the "Dinner at Court," during which Prince Colonna's triumphal entry into Rome and the subsequent festive banquet are re-enacted.
During the Palio dell'Assunta, the six contrade and three rioni of the borough compete in numerous games, such as the tug-of-war and the barrel race. The last day celebrates San Rocco, with the Joust of the Turk, during which knights compete by trying to center a ring placed at the end of a long track with a sword. The winner is awarded the Palio, a banner created each year by local artists.
