What is and where is the Castle of Calepio
When you walk up from the village of Calepio to the castle, you find yourself surrounded by greenery. To the side, a gate opens onto a park from which one can gaze out over the entire plain and the Oglio River. Two benches strategically placed on the escarpment allow a stop after the climb, to rest and admire the view.

Calepio Castle can only be visited with reservations. But don't be discouraged if you haven't arrived prepared: it is still worth the stop for its spectacular location. Surrounded by walls bordering the grassy moat, it lets you see two towers of light-colored stone blocks and the entrance ravelin. From the outside you can also get a glimpse of the beautiful Italianate garden overlooking the escarpment. From here it is worth going all the way to the rectory. Next to it, a rare 10th-century building is worth a stop to admire its distinctive one-piece gable windows.
A bit of history
The castle was built in 1430 as a defensive outpost by Count Trussardo Calepio, who sided with the Republic of Venice against the Duchy of Milan. It was transformed a century later into an elegant mansion. Today it belongs to the Foundation of the Counts of Calepio, who open it on set dates.
Curiosity: distinguished members of the Calepio family.
Ambrose, an Augustinian friar and great humanist, was also a member of the family of the Counts of Calepio. He was the author of the "Ditionarium latinum," printed in 1502, a monumental work explaining and translating words into seven European languages. From him he took the name Calepino, which was later extended as a common word to all subsequent dictionaries.
