Corneliano Bertario, a hamlet of Truccazzano, is a place where time seems to stand still: old courtyards, farmsteads and stables, irrigation ditches and canals, cultivated fields and woods and even a castle, the Borromeo Castle.
Why it is special: the Borromeo castle
The castle itself, built several times, is a beautiful place to discover. The tower, with massive walls almost two meters wide, made of salvaged materials, is the oldest part: it dates back to 1385. In the next two centuries the long body, the ravelin, the bastion at the back and a small prison, of only three rooms, were added. Nowadays it is possible to visit the Borromeo Castle by request, but it is worth even just taking the tour around it to be transported to an enchanted place suspended in time.
A bit of history: how Corneliano Bertario was born
The village, on the other hand, is much older. It probably dates back to Roman times when some land was in the possession of Gens Cornelia. A document from 1023 mentions Oddone Bertario, an inhabitant of Lombard origin from Corneliano Bertario. The existence of the village is thus attested as early as the 7th century. Today it is part of the municipality of Truccazzano, of which it is a hamlet, and has about 500 inhabitants. It preserves the historic center of courtyards and farmsteads almost intact.
Curiosity: the nature of Corneliano Bertario
In addition to the history of the place, Corneliano Bertario also pays attention to local nature. It does so thanks to a nature reserve where numerous species of wildlife can be found in what was once the Borromeo family's hunting reserve. Here once flowed the Adda River, of which only dead branches remain today.
