The Riviera of Angels - Isca on the Ionian Sea
The village began on the coast as a Greek colony but then stretched its territory up into the heart of the Serre
Where is

The sea in the eyes, the mountain in the soul
A coastal village, Isca is considered such because of its proximity to the sea, even though it looks at it from a beautiful height, and without forgetting that its territory then rises to over a thousand meters in altitude among the Calabrian Serre. This excursion is covered in the opposite direction by the Galliporo River, which marks the border with Badolato, offering remarkable glimpses of the environment. After the 1947 earthquake, the municipality split as if in two parts: the historic center, since then called Isca Superiore, remained as faithful as possible to its past, while the coastal hamlet of Isca Marina actually allowed its building growth.
A community that has learned to defend itself
The community has ancient origins, but in a different place than today: a Greek colony, most likely, in the coastal locality of Sanagasi, today's Zagaglie, where interesting archaeological finds have been made, including the remains of a rustic villa from the Roman era. Later, in order to take shelter from the raids of Saracen pirates, the ancestors of today's Ischanians, or Ischitans as they like to call them, sought shelter on the nearby heights. For confirmation, one need only consider the present site, high above the valley of the Vallescura stream, a name that is a guarantee.
The earthquake in the history of each town
At a distance, the historic center has the typical gyre-like appearance of medieval hilltop villages, except to catch an incongruous presence at the top, the modern parish church of St. Nicholas, a consequence of the last of several earthquakes. It is a novelty that is not grasped by walking up the quiet cobbled streets between two wings of low houses with a few aristocratic residences showing up as a surprise. The 18th-century Palazzo Romiti Cosentino, for example, with a diamond-pointed ashlar portal and two curious zoomorphic sculptures at the foot of the mullions.
Churches and saints, solemnities and square festivals
Duly mentioned the modern parish church of St. Nicholas, the most prominent feature of the historic center remains the church of the Santissima Annunziata, year of construction 1598, as engraved on one of the two bronzes in the bell tower. Introduced by a unique flight of steps, the church reveals at the high altar the statue of the Virgin, which is carried in procession on the third Sunday in August with a great concourse of the faithful. The patron saint St. Martial, on the other hand, has double festivities, on May 11 and the first Sunday in August, with similar exuberance of illuminations and events.
Seven years, but it's a wait worthwhile
"A tragedy" is the title of the historical re-enactment that involves the entire local population every seven years in early August. Subject, the martyrdom of St. Martial , "scripted in 5 acts, performed by 50 actors in Roman settings and costumes" according to the script of an anonymous Ischian author from the second half of the 19th century.
