Where is
What it is and where it is
Asmall town in Vallassina, Lasnigo is known for having been in its past the town of blacksmiths and, later, a center of spinning mills and spinning mills. It stands on the slopes of Mount Oriolo (1076 mslm), one of the peaks of the Larian Triangle, and holds small hidden treasures. One of these can be found on the dirt road leading to Alpe di Megna: the Church of St. Joseph dated 1757. It is called "dei Morti di Valmorana" because it was built on the then municipal lazaret called precisely Valmorana where Lasnigo's plague victims were buried in 1531. In a shrine in one of the walls of the church are preserved some bones of the plague victims.
Why it is special
The streets of Lasnigo are steeped in history: devotional images are distributed on the walls of the houses and in characteristic altars , in the village square there is a stone fountain built on a hollow boulder bearing a plaque dating back to Roman times, and not far away in the locality of "Furnass" stands a medieval furnace.
Not to be missed
There are five granite portals protected by the Superintendence. The portal in Piazza Fontana is dated 1774 and is a more refined and elegant variation on the classic smooth granite portal. Also from the mid-1700s belongs the portal with a plant motif on Via della Pace. Particular is the portal on Via Lazzaro Torriani, adorned with engraved rosettes and with a human mask in the center, dated 1736. A bell and a rhombus are carved on the 1743 portal on Via Fioroni. The last one on Torriani Street is from 1775 and has the typical features of local stone craftsmanship: smooth and massive.
A bit of history
To a family of Lasnigo weavers belonged the mother of Giovanni Testori, Italian writer, journalist, poet, art and literary critic, playwright, screenwriter, theater director and painter. The village is always present in Testori's creative imagination; his memories often return to his childhood period and to his family, to which he is intimately linked.
Trivia
The place name Lasnigo is said to be derived from the personal name Asina (l-Asnigo) or from Asuicus, meaning "Assi vicus" or "village of Asso."
