Marne, hamlet of Filago

What it is and where it is

Marne, in the municipality of Filago, is a hamlet that looks like something out of a fairy tale. There is nothing missing here: 500 inhabitants, an embattled castle, a tower, a Romanesque church, many rustic buildings, a river and a stream.

The church, rebuilt in the 1900s in neo-Gothic style, of the original Romanesque style preserves the beautiful semicircular apse, ornamented with half-columns mounted on pilasters and crowned with hanging arches. The tower dates from the 12th century and is made of river stones arranged in a herringbone pattern. Surrounding it is a small courtyard of rural buildings of the same material. It has recently been converted into a bed&breakfast. The river is the Brembo and the stream is the Dordo, which flows into the Brembo; at that very spot, on a rocky outcrop, stands the castle, in a defensive position.

A bit of history

The castle dates back to the first half of the 14th century; it belonged to the Avogadro family and then to the Colleoni family, which made it its summer residence; then, involved in the wars between the Duchy of Milan and the Serenissima and half destroyed, it was rebuilt in the first half of the 15th century. Restored in the late 19th century, with some neo-Gothic intervention, it is now inhabited but hosts weddings and events and can be visited by appointment.
