C.E.R.A. Museum Innovation and Tradition in Rapone
A multimedia and interactive museum engages visitors in the story of traditional life in the Lucanian village and the fairy tales that for generations have helped children understand the world around them

What is “C.E.R.A. una volta”
About 4 kilometers from Rapone, there’s a small hidden gem in an unassuming building: it’s the museum of Lucanian fairy tales. Its name, “C.E.R.A. una volta,” is not a spelling mistake but a play on words: C.E.R.A. stands for Rural and Environmental Education Center, created with the goal of preserving folklore, ancient crafts, religious rituals, and superstitions of the rural world of Rapone and Lucania.
An interactive, playful and educational museum
The sections dedicated to fairy tales are the most engaging: kids and adults alike can play at stealing the hat of the Scazzamauriedd, the mischievous elf; they can search for the tracks of the Lup Cumunal, the werewolf; they can learn to recognize by scent the herbs used by the Masciare (the witches) for their potions; or become powerful wizards and switch the seasons.
Saving the rural history of Rapone
So many testimonies have been gathered from the voices of the village elders and turned into powerful, sometimes moving videos. Candid eyes framed by wrinkles, calloused hands, the rough sound of the Lucanian dialect. Through their memories, the elders invite us into their world—full of effort and ritual-like gestures, sustained by ancient wisdom: making pasta, weaving wicker, working the land, going to church, to school or to the market… Even those coming from afar will sense how deeply our roots are nourished by the same soil, a bond born of our shared connection to the natural world.
A bit of history
The museum was inaugurated in 2016 to enhance the demo-ethno-anthropological heritage of Rapone and to build connections between a precious past at risk of being forgotten and our present. Its interactive and multimedia setup makes it a great place for the whole family.
