Santu Lussurgiu is an inland Sardinian town located in the province of Oristano. It is the perfect place for those who have already seen the sea of Sardinia many times and want to push themselves into the heart of this beautiful region: the old village, with its buildings, cobbled streets and narrow glimpses, but also the nature of the surrounding hills, full of natural wonders such as waterfalls, springs, and streams.
Why it is special
Among the churches and historic buildings of Santu Lussurgiu, it is possible to experience Sardinian culture and traditions. Two of the absolute best occasions are the festival of Santu Lussurgiu, dedicated to the town's patron saint, and Sa Carrela 'e Nanti, an equestrian competition held in carnival.
Not to be missed
To best immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Santu Lussurgiu, a walk through the streets of the historic center, paved in cobblestones and surrounded by buildings that are often made of living stone, or with doorways decorated with carved cornices and lintels, is a must. As you walk, you will get to know a few places in particular: the churches of Santa Croce and Madonna degli Angeli, ancient guardians of the spirituality of the people of Lussurgesi, and the Museum of Peasant Technology, a witness to rural life in this area.
A bit of history
Around the village one finds clues to its very long history. Among the oldest witnesses are the nuraghi, or their remains that can be seen in these places. The best preserved are the nuraghe Piricu and Elighe Onna.
Trivia
The word "Santu" is the Sardinian form for "saint," indicating a reference to a saint or religious figure. "Lussurgiu" is probably related to a linguistic adaptation of the Latin "lucurgus," which may be associated with Lucius or the name of a Roman deity. Thus, the name could be interpreted as "Saint Lucius" or "Place of Lucius."
