“Vertigine” in Scilla. A marvel worth preserving
It was a sophisticated restaurant with a spectacular panoramic terrace, a landmark for all the residents of Scilla
Where

What is “Vertigine” and where is it?
We are in one of the most scenic spots in Scilla: Piazza San Rocco, a vast terrace with a breathtaking view of the sea: on one side, Castello Ruffo; on the other, the Strait and Sicily. Leaning against the railing to gaze out at the sea, the magic fades when we look down at an old, dilapidated tin roof. It is—or rather, was—Vertigine, a historic Scillan restaurant from the 1950s nestled in the rock beneath Piazza San Rocco.
Why it’s special: the exploration
We feel a bit like Roberto Giacobbo from Freedom when—armed with special permits and helmets and guided by the keeper of the keys—we enter the abandoned premises of “Vertigine.” Inside, traces of the recent past are evident: part of the restaurant’s furnishings and kitchen equipment are still there, under a thick layer of dust. Our imagination runs wild, already envisioning a new life. But when we step out onto the terrace suspended over the sea, it is pure wonder.
The Possible Future of Vertigine
What might the future of Vertigine be? A local museum? An art gallery? A multifunctional tourist center? A community center? A co-working space? Or perhaps a clever mosaic of all these things? One thing is certain: Vertigine must be returned to the people of Scilla.
