This beautiful villa in Lugo di Vicenza is a wonder among wonders, nestled as it is in a privileged position: one only has to look out from its loggia to enjoy a unique view of the Lessini Mountains and the Vicentine Pre-Alps, a delight for the eyes and the soul. But now, as much as the view is an irresistible charmer, it is time to divert our attention to focus it on the villa itself.
Why it is special
We find ourselves in the presence of a building composed of a central wing set slightly back from the two side wings. Right in the center, a simple yet majestic staircase leads to a frescoed loggia introduced by three arches. Harmony reigns supreme, and perhaps this is precisely the element that betrays Villa Godi's illustrious origins. It is in fact one of the earliest works of an architect whose mastery would make people from all over the world fall in love with him: Andrea Palladio.
Not to be missed
Inside, we are greeted by rooms rich in frescoes of the Venetian school that with their light and bright hues, airy settings and historical and mythological characters transform the rooms into vast and fantastic environments, where we can relax and marvel every time our eyes catch a new detail of the decorations.
A bit of history
The construction of the villa was commissioned by Girolamo Godi for his son, Antonio, and work was completed in 1542. It was designed by Andrea Palladio, while the decoration of the frescoes was entrusted to other very important artists of the time: Giambattista Zelotti, Gualtiero Padovano and Battista del Moro. The centuries did not affect the beauty of the structure, so much so that Villa Godi hosted the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII.
Trivia
Like any self-respecting villa, Villa Godi also has a beautiful park: among century-old plants, paths, fountains and water features there is plenty to enjoy. But be careful not to miss a truly distinctive feature: a pavilion in the park that houses none other than the "Pierluigi Malinverni" Fossil Museum, which houses the world's longest fossil palm tree.
