Pita festival in Alessandria del Carretto

What is "the pita?" A huge fir tree that in April is the centerpiece of the feast of the patron saint of Alessandria del Carretto. A fir tree at least two meters tall is felled from the Pollino Mountain Range and prepared to be carried by arm to the village on the last Sunday in April. Can you imagine that? A titanic feat accompanied and celebrated by music and dancing. The next morning, the pita is decorated and raised to dominate the whole village.
