Where is
What it is and where it is
Finalborgo is the richest historical and cultural hub of the Finale Ligure municipality. It rises in a fortunate geographical position, embraced by the Aquila watercourses to the east and Pora to the west, which flow on either side of a promontory above which Fort San Giovanni rises in defense of the village. The flat part of the village, on the other hand, where the streets, squares and buildings draw the typical grid of medieval town centers, is surrounded by mighty stone walls, mostly dating back to the 15th century.
Why it is special
Finalborgo, with its extraordinary expanse, will surprise you. With us it did. We entered the streets of the village through Porta Testa, thinking we were going back to medieval times, when in fact we notice an immensely greater historical-architectural richness, not only because of the substantial number of well-preserved buildings, but also because of the different eras from which they come.
Not to be missed
Just as a testimony to Finalborgo's enormous historical-artistic and cultural heritage is the architectural complex of Santa Caterina. From the outside it might be deceptive: we thought it was just another church. Instead, the building hides, in addition to the characteristic cloister on the north side, the Finalele Media Library and, most importantly, the Civic Museum. In fact, among the medieval buildings, another key era emerges in this extraordinary cultural hub: prehistory, with numerous jealously preserved artifacts.
A bit of history
So, one enters the Middle Ages through the walls, but then rediscovers, amazingly, all eras, from the beginning of time to the present. From Neanderthal man, with the famous burial of the "Young Prince," to Paleolithic and Neolithic fossils found all over the Finale territory. And again from pre-Christian and early Christian to Byzantine evidence, all the way to the Renaissance and Baroque periods. All you have to do is arm yourself with plenty of time and interest and come to this small universe that carries the history of the world.
Curiosities
Finalborgo, among its many riches does not fail to mention a Black Legend. The Giannuzzi Tower, built between the 12th and 14th centuries on the heights of San Bernardino, is said to have been the scene of a terrible affair: the Marquis of the time, Alfonso II del Carretto, is said to have locked up there the daughter of the Acquaviva miller, Belenda, because he was in love with her. The poor girl, who had refused to give in to him, was found dead in the basement of the tower by her fiancé Medaro. Today the tower is named after the young woman.
