Where is
What it is and where it is
On the summit of Mount San Michele, in the province of Gorizia, the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo was fought. On this mountain today stands the museum of the same name, a small jewel of public history that tells the story of that crude battle through artifacts and technology. Entrenched paths, tunnels with artillery positions, monuments in remembrance, old cannons and nature walks that lead along a historical path on which plaques and shelters can still be seen today is what this place offers the visitor. A place of remembrance that makes one reflect well by making one touch the horrors of war.
Why it is special
This is an amazing place that offers a one-of-a-kind experience through immersive reality and some multimedia experiences. Said like that, there doesn't seem to be anything special about it, but when you consider that this museum is really tiny, the argument changes, because you would usually expect to find this technology in larger facilities. This is how the Great War Museum at Mt. San Michele becomes a symbol that the saying "in the small bang there is good wine" is truer than ever.
Not to be missed
The museum stands on the very sites where the events it recounts took place. The advice, therefore, is to enjoy the entire museum experience and the entire outdoor trail.
A bit of history
The Sixth Battle of the Isonzo was fought from August 4 to 17, but attacks on the Karst occurred as early as June. These battles, although insignificant in terms of troops engaged, saw for the first time the use of gas on the eastern front, an act that led to heavy losses in the Italian ranks. Because of the gas and aerial bombardment, Italian units found themselves without reinforcements and were forced to leave the San Michele territory in Austro-Hungarian hands.
Trivia
In June 1916, as clashes between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian divisions advanced on the San Michele, Giuseppe Ungaretti was in the rear not far away, and among his writings we find all the horrors of trench warfare.
