The parish church of San Daniele in castello is located at the top of the hill in the town of San Daniele del Friuli. It is a small church with a simple, white facade that can be reached by walking up the hill to the top and then climbing a little further up the steps that lead to the church. Since its name is San Daniele in castello, it comes naturally to look around and look for this fortification, but it is not easy to see it: only a tower and a few remnants of earthworks remain.
A bit of history
Right here was the Roman and medieval stronghold of the area, but the oldest wards found by archaeologists even date back to the period between the 11th and 8th centuries BC. Among fragments of everyday objects, burials, and a few artistic finds, on the hill of San Daniele it is possible to trace the history of human settlement in this area.
Why it is special
The present church of San Daniele was built in the 1700s but still preserves traces of the place's past. For example, the side portal is a 16th-century work made for the Cathedral of San Daniele but later destined here. Behind the apse is a copy of a bas-relief depicting an adoration of the Magi made in the Barbarian era (the original is kept in the Territorial Museum). The bell tower also hides a little surprise: it was born as a tower, and only later became the seat of the church bell.
Emotions not to be missed
Climbing the hill of San Daniele is an experience not to be missed when visiting the village. Adding to the pleasure of the walk, albeit a bit of a slope, is the discovery of San Daniele's little gems, such as one of the town's most beautiful 16th-century houses and the Palladian-inspired Villa Ticozzi de' Concina. And once you get to the church you will enjoy the beauty of the view and the depth of history of this place.
Curiosity: the mystery of S4
A small curiosity: during archaeological excavations, a burial was found inside the church. Only one. All the others are outside the building, and they seem to want to be as close as possible to the tomb inside. Archaeologists have christened the interior skeleton S4. It is not known who it is, only that it was carefully buried and that over time the tomb was reopened and an arm bone was taken away, perhaps to make it a relic. The identity of S4 is the little unsolved mystery of St. Daniel's Church in Castle. Who knows if somewhere around here the solution to the riddle is also hidden.
